The Ringling Barber Shop was established downtown on Main Street many years ago. Its name comes from the Ringling’s. It is one of the oldest barber shops in downtown Sarasota. In the early 70’s the owner moved the barber shop from Main Street to Ringling Blvd.
The barber pole is a sign from many years ago. The Barber was the Doctor and the Dentist too!
The stripes represent bandages. They were old and new strips of white linen bandages, the redder the white linen bandage got the more soiled they would become for them, the blood. The Barber would wash the bandages and place them on a round hanger that had clips on it and he would hang them outside to dry, from a distance you could see the bandages hanging outside and that would tell you the Barber was in. When the wind would blow the bandages would move in a circle. Sometime later the barber started using leaches for blood poisoning; the barber would put the leaches on people to draw the poison out of the veins. That is where the blue strip comes from in the barber pole. If you look at the barber pole you will notice that the stripes are not really red, white and blue. The stripes are white, red, white, blue, white, red, white, blue, white.
So, today if you see the barber pole spinning from the road, that means the barber is in. But my pole is very old and sometimes it doesn’t want to spin, so if is not spinning please check the open sign.
It’s hard to believe we have been here for over 30 years. March 13, 1985 is the day my dad bought the Ringling Barber Shop. I was still in barber school. I will never forget that day he walked into the school with the biggest smile on his face. I knew whatever it was, it’s going to be good because has was soooo happy.
My dad was always happy even when things where bad he always found a happy place, But this day he was extremely happy and I knew he had something to tell me. He walked right up to me smiled and said “guess what” and I said “what,” he said “I bought a Barber Shop today.” My first thought was why and what I said was the awesome. And I have been here ever since. I’m so thankful for my dad believing in me to buy this shop. I was scared of letting him down but, it was one of the greatest things that could have happened. I get to work at a place I never feel like I’m working. I was blessed to have raised my girls at the shop with the help of my wonderful customers. My husband Mike Hamel and I were able to buy the shop from my dad in 1992.
Mike and I have been married for almost 27 years our anniversary is October 15 2015. Bailey and Cassidy will be 22 years old in September 2015.
